Supporting Seasonal Workers

From the first shift to the last: keeping your young & vulnerable seasonal workers safe

Is your municipality preparing to hire seasonal workers? Does your hiring/onboarding incorporate strategies to mitigate workers at risk for injury/illness?

Unfortunately, Alberta injury/illness data continues to show concerning trends in young and vulnerable workers who are often highly represented in seasonally hired workforces.

In this interactive 45-minute session featuring guest speaker Dave Wojcicki, OHS Effective Practices Specialist with the Government of Alberta, we provided an overview of key statistics that directly concern seasonal workers, and discuss the available resources and best practices to onboard and prevent injuries over the course of the season.

What You’ll Learn:

  1. Identify workplace hazards faced by seasonal workers and outline effective approaches to eliminate and control them.
  2. Apply knowledge to enhance safety practices to eliminate or control hazards faced by seasonal workers.
  3. Locate and use key safety resources to support the onboarding and protection of seasonal workers.
  4. Understand current trends relevant to young and vulnerable workers, per statistics provided by the Government of Alberta.

Seasonal work is temporary. Workplace injuries can be permanent. Let’s work together to safeguard all of Alberta’s young and vulnerable workforce.

Why This Matters:

As a tragic testament to the increased risk of workplace injury/illness that at-risk workers face, AMHSA has been the recipient of numerous Creative Sentencing awards resulting from the disabling injury or fatality of municipal seasonal workers. As the statistics show, action in this area is still needed to ensure these workers return home safely, every day.
