Mental Health First Aid

Date: Friday Sep 15, 2017 - Friday Sep 29, 2017
Location: AMHSA

Did you know?

  • Mental Illness is the #1 cause of disability in the Canadian workplace.
  • $51 billion is lost in productivity each year due to mental illness.
  • 1 in 4 Canadians will experience a mental health problem every year.

Employers are increasingly expected to address mental health issues in the workplace.

AMHSA has been researching mental health awareness initiatives in an effort to provide effective mental wellness training, resources, and support to the municipal sector.
As such, AMHSA is pleased to announce that the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is now available for booking as of October 1, 2017.

MHFA is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just like physical first aid is provided until medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved.

The stigma associated with mental health can hinder employees from seeking help. MHFA is an evidence based, 2 day training program for staff and managers, and a proactive step towards building a psychologically healthy and safe workplace.

MHFA trained employees will be equipped to recognize and understand the symptoms of mental health problems including those related to substance use.

These preventative strategies can contribute to:

  • Increased productivity
  • Reduced absenteeism and health benefits costs
  • Reduced stigma around mental illness
  • Create mental wellness within your workplace
  • Provide preventative help for mental health problems developing into more serious states.

Participants will receive a handbook, a MHFA Certificate and be registered as a Mental Health First Aid responder with the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
