Ergonomics Coaching & MSI Prevention - Vehicle Ergonomics: Proper Set-up for Driving and Operating Heavy Equipment

Anyone who spends significant time driving, or operating heavy equipment will benefit from learning about all the items within a vehicle that should be adjusted by the operator.  This session will also discuss other health and comfort strategies such as how often to get up and move during the day.  Front line operators, as well as those involved in purchasing fleet vehicles will gain knowledge during this session.

Learning Objectives

  • Attendees will be able to identify the signs & symptoms of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs).
  • Attendees will be able to identify the primary risk factors associated with the development of MSIs associated with driving and using heavy equipment.
  • Attendees will be able to setup vehicle and heavy equipment to reduce their risk of developing an MSI.

Cognitive-Psychosocial Job Demands Analysis Pilot

The Industry Task Force (ITF) Association’s Psychological Injury Working Group (PIWG) and WCB-Alberta is moving forward with a pilot of the Cognitive-Psychosocial Job Demands Analysis form. This pilot is open to ITF members and AMHSA members.

To participate, please complete the fillable PDF for any new psychological injury claim and submit it with the claim or to the claim owner. Please direct any claim specific questions to the adjudicator. On a case by case basis, the claim owner may also reach out to you on other active claims where a Cognitive-Psychosocial JDA could be helpful in the return to work process.

Because this is a pilot, WCB-Alberta is looking for feedback on the process or the form itself. For example, is this form useful, is there information you would like to see added, any wording that is not clear, areas where additional explanation would be helpful, other tools that you would find useful for assessing cognitive or psychosocial demands, etc.  

Send any comments on the form or the process to Shannon ([email protected]), to be consolidated. Feedback from the pilot will be useful in determining future rollout to Alberta employers.

◙ Aquatic Health and Safety Awareness: Types of Fall Protection, Including Guardrails

The Aquatics Health and Safety Awareness campaign is designed to raise awareness of occupational health and safety concerns for those working in and around aquatic facilities, and to provide free and accessible resources to workers (including vulnerable/new/young workers), supervisors, pool facility operators, and organizations. The webinars are no cost, open to all attendees, and will be recorded and made available following the event.

This 45-minute webinar is presented by a fall protection engineering expert that will review when a fall protection plan and fall protection training are required. The subject matter expert will also discuss the hierarchy of controls specific for fall protection, and the types of systems, such as guardrails, travel restraint, fall arrest, and control zones. This general understanding is fundamental before creating a fall protection plan and implementing its systems.  Following the webinar, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of our subject matter expert.

  • Review when fall protection is required.
  • Outline the hierarchy of controls specific for slips, trips, and falls.
  • Identify the types of systems involved in the fall protection plan, such as: guardrails, travel restraint, fall arrest, and control zones.
  • Review Alberta OHS legislation - specifically, water danger [AB OHS Code 157], Fall Protection Plan [AB OHS Code140(1)], Instruction of workers [AB OHS Code141(1) and 141(3)], and fall protection hierarchy [AB OHS Code139(3) to 13(8)].
