We will discuss methods for identifying risk factors and strategies to reduce musculoskeletal risk, including job coaching. This talk will focus on six general ergonomics principles. These principles are a starting point toward implementing engineering controls, behavioural changes, and updates to training. Attendees are then encouraged to meet with their teams and use these principles as a starting point to target musculoskeletal injury risk reduction.

Attendees will be able to:

• Identify the signs & symptoms of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs).
• Identify the primary risk factors associated with the development of MSIs associated with maintaining fleet vehicles.
• Complete their maintenance tasks in a manner to reduce their risk of developing an MSI.
• Set up workstations to optimize awkward postures. 
• Optimize task order to reduce overloading.
• Identify MSI signs & symptoms for early reporting.
• Identify primary risk factors for MSI development to make changes.
• Identify equipment that could be used to reduce awkward postures.

Various aspects of labour relations impact disability management, including the collective agreement and provincial labour relations act.

Memorandums of agreement and letters of intent used in establishing programs and joint committees will be examined. Dispute resolution in a union setting will be explored.

In partnership with Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences, AMHSA is offering several learning events related to disability management and successful return to work. These learning events apply towards the Disability Management Practitioner certificate program offered by PCU.

Each course has been endorsed by the Canadian Society of Professionals in Disability Management (CSPDM) for continuing education credit (CEC) hours for the professional designations of:

• Certified Disability Management Professional (CDMP) and
• Certified Return to Work Coordinator (CRTWC)
