PHS 105: Respectful Workplace Foundation

Date: Wednesday Apr 28, 2021
Time: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Location: Online

This one-day program provides a foundation for how to facilitate a respectful workplace. Respectful workplace policies are often not enough. Creating a respectful environment requires a strategy and action plan that promotes civility, respect and how to resolve conflict when it occurs.

Risk of mental harm exists in the workplace when an employee or manager engage in misconduct behaviours that negatively impact another employee’s psychological or physical safety. The purpose of this course is to explore foundational considerations for how to reduce the risk for this kind of behavioural conduct and what to do move past them.

PHS 105 is approved for 10 CPD hours through CPHR-Alberta.

Certificate Program

Building on the successful delivery of the two-day Psychological Health and Safety Facilitator Certification program that was offered this past June, Alberta Health and Safety Association (AMHSA) and its strategic partner, Howatt HR, will be releasing five additional course offerings starting on November 23. These five new courses will enable participants to work towards a Psychological Health and Safety Facilitator’s Certificate.

AMHSA is also offering the opportunity for participants to register for selected individual courses that will result in a certificate of training upon completion for each course taken.

The goal of this program is to support organizations in developing practical workplace mental health strategies and the mental health competencies of their operational leaders. Upon completion of all courses, participants will be certified as a Psychological Health and Safety Facilitator. All courses may be completed within 24 months.

Aquatic Health and Safety Awareness: Types of Fall Protection, Including Guardrails

Date: April 30, 2024
Time: 11:00-12:00
Location: Online

The Aquatics Health and Safety Awareness campaign is designed to raise awareness of occupational health and safety concerns for those working in and around aquatic facilities, and to provide free and accessible resources to workers (including vulnerable/new/young workers), supervisors, pool facility operators, and organizations. The webinars are no cost, open to all attendees, and will be recorded and made available following the event.

This 45-minute webinar is presented by a fall protection engineering expert that will review when a fall protection plan and fall protection training are required. The subject matter expert will also discuss the hierarchy of controls specific for fall protection, and the types of systems, such as guardrails, travel restraint, fall arrest, and control zones. This general understanding is fundamental before creating a fall protection plan and implementing its systems.  Following the webinar, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions of our subject matter expert.

  • Review when fall protection is required.
  • Outline the hierarchy of controls specific for slips, trips, and falls.
  • Identify the types of systems involved in the fall protection plan, such as: guardrails, travel restraint, fall arrest, and control zones.
  • Review Alberta OHS legislation - specifically, water danger [AB OHS Code 157], Fall Protection Plan [AB OHS Code140(1)], Instruction of workers [AB OHS Code141(1) and 141(3)], and fall protection hierarchy [AB OHS Code139(3) to 13(8)].
