The staff of AMHSA report to a Board of Directors who represent various municipal interests. There are 14 members on the Board, representing the following organizations:
- Local Government Administration Association (LGAA)
- Alberta Rural Municipal Administrators Association (ARMAA)
- City of Edmonton
- City of Calgary
- A city which is not Calgary or Edmonton
- Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMD&C)
- Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA)
- Inside and Outside Worker Representatives from Edmonton and Calgary (CSU Union 52 - Edmonton, CUPE 30 - Edmonton, CUPE 37 - Calgary, CUPE 38 - Calgary)
- Worker representative from a city which is not Calgary or Edmonton
- Alberta Water and Wastewater Operators' Association (AWWOA)
- Alberta Municipal Supervisors Association
AMHSA meets with the Board in September each year for a Planning Day which includes reviewing results from the previous year and the development of a Business Plan for the next year which includes detailed Objectives.
The Board of Directors also meets 4 other times throughout the year (December, April, June, and September) to ensure that the Association is meeting its objectives and to address any emerging issues. Board of Directors meetings are held in the Edmonton area, Calgary, and Red Deer. The Executive (Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary/Treasurer) are elected each year in September.
The Board also participates in AMHSA's Annual General Meeting which is held each year in April in the Edmonton area.
