AMHSA was established in 1990, at the request of the AUMA and AAMD&C. Every town, village, municipal district, county, city and specialized municipality in Alberta is automatically a member of the association. Our funding comes primarily from a levy collected by the Workers' Compensation Board from each municipality.

Although our primary mandate is to assist municipalities in their workplace health and safety efforts, other employers may join as associate members for an annual fee. The staff of AMHSA report to a Board of Directors who represent various municipal interests. There are 14 members on the Board, representing the following interests:
AMHSA meets with the Board in September each year, in order to review our results from the previous year, and to plan our next year's activities. We meet 4 other times throughout the year to ensure that we are meeting our objectives and to address any emerging issues.
Every fall AMHSA co-sponsors a health & safety / utility workshop in Red Deer. It is one of the most cost-effective conferences of its kind in the province, and the feedback is always excellent. We send out information to all municipalities in September, once the program is established. See the RUSA website for more information.
