Municipal Certification Programs

At AMHSA we recognize that a number of municipal employees have extensive training in the field of health and safety and deserve recognition. We also know that employees and municipalities need guidance in selecting the appropriate training for staff depending on their role within the municipal health and safety program. To address these issues, AMHSA is pleased to offer the following designations:

Each of these designations is described below, including the courses required to achieve the designation.

the fine print
  • Leadership for Safety Excellence is a 2-day course, consisting of 4 modules: Supervisor's Role; Hazard Identification, Assessment, and Control; Formal Inspections and Incident Investigation. Each module will be recognized as required courses for these designations.
  • If a municipal employee has already taken the required training for one of the designations, that previous training will be recognized. However it is up to the individual to provide documentation to AMHSA for verification.
  • All training must be completed within 3 years.

Safety Advisor

 
 

Recognized Municipal Health & Safety Advisor

This certification is intended for municipal employees who take a lead role in coordinating the development / implementation / review of the health and safety management system. This could include the municipality's certified peer auditors, among others.

To achieve this designation, participants must take 12 compulsory courses, and 2 electives as follows:

Compulsory Courses - all of the following are required:
  • Health and Safety Management Systems
  • Disability Management
  • Prime Contractor
  • Confined Space Entry
  • Trenching Safety
  • Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program (either Physically Demanding or Office Environment module)
  • Health and Safety Management System Audit
  • Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control
  • Formal Workplace Inspections
  • Incident Investigation
  • Supervisor's Role or Overview of Health & Safety Management Systems
  • WHMIS Train-the-Trainer
Elective Courses - any two of the following are required:
  • Flagperson Train-the-Trainer
  • Joint Health and Safety Committees
  • Defensive Driving
  • + Road Grader Operator Safety
  • + Front End Loader Operator Safety
  • + Backhoe/Loader Operator Safety
  • + Skid Steer Loader Operator Safety
  • Workplace Violence Prevention

Municipal Supervisor

 
 

Municipal Supervisor in Health & Safety

This certification indicates that the participant has a basic understanding of the supervisor's responsibilities for health & safety. Courses required for this certification include:

  • Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control
  • Formal Workplace Inspections
  • Incident Investigation
  • Supervisor's Role or Overview of Health and Safety Management Systems
  • Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program (either Physically Demanding or Office Environment module)
 
     

Committee Representative

 
 

Municipal Joint Health & Safety Committee Representative

Joint Health and Safety Committee members are often expected to assist in the development and implementation of the municipality's health and safety program. Specific activities that they participate in include performing formal inspections and investigating incidents (or reviewing incident reports). Many members feel that they need more training in these areas. To receive certification as a JHSC representative, participants must take the following courses:

  • Joint Health and Safety Committees
  • Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control
  • Formal Workplace Inspections
  • Incident Investigations
